Rice

Rice is a staple food for more than half of the world’s population and comes from the seeds of the Oryza sativa or Oryza glaberrima plant. It is cultivated mainly in Asia and is available in a variety of types, including long-grain (like Basmati and Jasmine), medium-grain, and short-grain (such as Arborio and Sushi rice), each with its own texture and cooking qualities. Rice can be white, brown, red, or black, depending on how it’s processed and its variety, with brown and colored rice retaining more nutrients due to their unpolished layers. It is incredibly versatile, forming the base of countless dishes worldwide—from biryanis and stir-fries to risottos and sushi—and provides a good source of carbohydrates, making it an essential part of balanced diets across cultures.
